Types of Retainers We Offer

Clear Plastic Retainers (Essix Retainers)

These are the most popular choice among our adult and teenage patients in KR Puram. They look exactly like clear aligners—made from transparent plastic that fits snugly over the entire arch of your teeth. They are virtually invisible, very comfortable, and easy to remove for eating and cleaning. However, they need to be replaced periodically as the plastic can wear down or warp over time.

Hawley Retainers

The traditional Hawley retainer consists of an acrylic base molded to fit the roof of your mouth (or along the inside of your lower teeth) and a prominent metal wire that wraps around the front of your teeth to hold them in place. While more visible than clear retainers, Hawley retainers are incredibly durable and adjustable. Our orthodontists can actually tweak the wire to make minor corrections if slight shifting has occurred. The acrylic base can also be customized with various colors and patterns.

Permanent (Bonded) Retainers

A permanent retainer consists of a thin custom wire glued to the back (lingual) surfaces of your front teeth, typically the lower six front teeth where relapse is most common. Because it is permanently attached, you never have to remember to wear it. It provides round-the-clock retention. However, it requires careful flossing using a floss threader to prevent tartar buildup around the wire. We often recommend a combination of a bonded retainer on the bottom teeth and a removable retainer for the top teeth at our Bangalore clinic.

Retainer Care and Maintenance

Removable retainers must be cleaned daily using a soft brush and non-abrasive soap or specific retainer-cleaning tablets; never use hot water, as it can melt or warp the plastic. Always store your retainer in its hard case when not in your mouth—never wrap it in a napkin, as it is easily thrown away. Remember, retention is for life.
